Before waxberries even started to be sold this year, a rumor began to circulate on the internet, alleging that a swelling agent was being injected into the waxberry in both Yuzhao and Cixi areas, arousing concern amongst netizens. The Yuzhao government soon made a response on their official Sina Weibo (a twitter-like service in China), clarifying that there were no swelling agents in the waxberry according to tests conducted by the ministry of agriculture of China and other two testing organizations. Yuzhao and Cixi are main production areas of waxberry in Ningbo, both of which enjoy good reputations. And people in Yuzhao even hold a waxberry festival each year. The fast-spreading rumor seriously affected the reputation of waxberry in Yuzhao and Cixi, and created lots of pressure on the local orchard workers.
