The Memorial Day holiday is right around the corner. Bookings for air tours on Grand Canyon helicopters are skyrocketing. This year, Memorial Day is on Monday, the 26th of May. It's a three-day holiday weekend, and lots of folks use it to visit the spectacular Grand Canyon. That's why I suggest locking down your tour tickets right after booking your hotel. Booking one to two weeks in advance is ideal. Tours of the canyon originate in Las Vegas, Sedona, Phoenix, Flagstaff, Scottsdale, and Williams. Las Vegas Tours To The West Rim One important thing to know is the choppers from Las Vegas only fly to the West Rim. The South Rim is just too far for them. It shouldn't matter that much because you can have a fantastic time at the West Rim. You can fly to the floor of the canyon at the West Rim, and that is the only place it is permitted in the National Park. That flight is something you don't want to miss. Vegas-based travelers can opt for a landing tour or an air-only version. However, all the tours give you an amazing view of the canyon along with the Skywalk, Hoover Dam, and Lake Mead. The landing tours come in two types too, one lands on the canyon rim and the other one flies you to the floor of the canyon. This particular tour includes lunch at the bottom, a fun Colorado River boat ride is an optional add-on. Some of the choppers used in the Vegas tours take off from an airfield in nearby Boulder City, but you should opt for a tour that takes off right from the Vegas Strip. Taking off from the Strip is the best choice. It is a lot more convenient for you to get to the Strip, plus the tour operators offer a free shuttle service to your hotel. So do the Boulder City flights, but they use a van to shuttle passengers. The Strip tours use a LIMO. That's pretty fun. Plus, Strip departures show you the entire length of The Strip as part of the tour. South Rim Tours If you'll be based somewhere in AZ, a South Rim helicopter tour would be perfect. Unlike the West Rim, no chopper flights can land at the bottom of the South Rim. I'm betting you won't care, though, because this Rim is absolutely magnificent. There are two tours available here too, one of them is thirty minutes long and the other one lasts fifty minutes. I always suggest the latter because you'll see as much as 3/4 of the entire Park before it's over. There are some fun tour packages available at the South Rim. For example, you can add on a sunset Jeep ride and watch the sun sink over the canyon, or add an exciting tour on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. It's important to take a deluxe flight if you can. Why? These tours use the EcoStar 130 choppers and they offer an exceptional experience. They provide stadium-style seats, roomy cabins, and a wraparound windshield for excellent viewing. EcoStars are really the only way to go. To Wrap Up Memorial Day weekend is a very busy time at the Grand Canyon. The date is fast approaching, so book your tour as soon as possible. If you plan to depart from Vegas, choose a tour that takes off from the Strip. EcoStar helicopters service both rims, so try to book a seat on one for the ultimate touring experience.
