-- Ridership up as gasoline hit record 1Q pump price -- Gasoline demand fell to 11-year low in 1Q, EIA says -- Increases reported on all modes of public transportation U.S. public transit ridership rose 5% in the first quarter from a year earlier amid high fuel prices, the American Public Transportation Association said Monday. "High [gasoline] prices were part of the reason for this large first quarter ridership increase," said Michael Melaniphy, APTA president. "More and more people are choosing to save money by taking public transportation when [ gasoline] prices are high." The federal Energy Information Administration said last week that U.S. gasoline demand dropped to a 11-year low in the first quarter, at less than 8.5 million barrels a day and was 1.5% below the 2011 first quarter average. The drop came as the average nationwide retail price of regular-grade gasoline set a first-quarter record of $3.60 a gallon, up 9.6% from a year ago. APTA said all public transit modes saw increases in the first quarter, with light-rail use up by 6.7% from a year earlier and use of subways and elevated trains up by 5.5%. Commuter rail ridership was up 3.9%, while bus ridership was up around 4.5%. Some public transit systems reported record ridership for the first quarter, including Boston, New York City and Tampa, Fla. Nearly 60% of trips on public transportation are for work commutes, the transit group said.
