Advances in technology have finally brought about an interesting alternative to traditional tobacco products, and that alternative is known as the e cigarette. At the core, the product is simply a battery-powered device that vaporizes fluid containing nicotine, propylene glycol, and artificial flavorings. There is absolutely no tobacco involved whatsoever, and that has resulted in certain groups of people heralding the product as the "healthy" replacement to tobacco. Emphasis is being placed on that particular word, because there is still much study going on in the medical community about the safety of this bold new replacement. How can an e cigarette be harmful if it only produces tobacco-free vapor? The spotlight is usually turned to nicotine, a drug that experts find to be quite the mystery when it is separated from its usual buddy, tobacco. Normally, the nicotine in a traditional cigarette gets the user addicted to smoking more, which is dangerous due to the proven negative effects of tobacco. E cigarettes don't have that problem at all, though. In their case, the nicotine simply has a chance of getting the user hooked on more nicotine, as well as the other ingredients in the fluid. Nicotine and the fluid ingredients by themselves haven't been absolutely proven to be significantly harmful to humans yet, which is a soothing relief to smokers all around the world. Propylene glycol is an ingredient of the e cigarette that is usually used in theatrical productions whenever there is a need for smoke effects. The FDA has recognized the substance as being generally safe while in food, but inhaling it is a whole different situation that will require further study. Also, some groups have brought up the possible risk of being exposed to small amounts of toxic metals such as tin while the device is in use. These metals do have carcinogenic effects on humans once a certain level of exposure is reached, but that will most likely never occur from normal usage of the device. Another possible issue involves the fact that some brands of the device have been discovered to have roughly 1 percent diethylene glycol as a mixture ingredient. This normally toxic ingredient is used in antifreeze, but once again, the miniscule levels of it will more than likely not harm humans. There is no doubt that the elimination of tobacco as an ingredient is a tremendous factor in favor of the e cigarette, but many questions still remain unanswered. The FDA has made it clear that more research needs to be done on the product in order to better understand the effects of it on the consumer. For now, though, the young technological marvel has already proven that it is quite safer than its tobacco-laden predecessor. Future developments in technology might even improve the product to the point where it is completely safe without question, and that would be a smoker's dream. The combined efforts of manufacturers, scientists, and medical researchers certainly have a chance of turning that dream into a reality.
