Your Knee Surgeon Would Recommend These Low Impact Exercises

The saying "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link" can surely be applied to discussions of the human body. While all parts of the body are essential to a happy and healthy life, your knee surgeon would probably have a good idea about one important joint down below your waist. Knee pain and injury are not common just among professional athletes and competitive runners but also among people of all ages and activity level. While it may seem like a catch-22, one of the best ways to avoid knee injury is to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. What is important here is to always exercise safely and within your comfort level. Here are some great exercises when recovering from a knee injury or when trying to avoid knee pain.

Water Activities

Exercising in the water is one of the most comprehensive and total body workouts you can get. Swimming and water aerobic activities use more muscle groups and put less stress on joints than similar activities on dry land. Getting into a regular swimming routine will benefit your heart and lung functioning as well. Swimming at a steady pace will help you build flexibility, stamina and joint strength. Whether at your community pool or a fitness center, the pool can also be a tremendous way to meet other swimmers and join exercise groups. Having a partner or a group to exercise with will increase the likelihood that you'll be motivated and stick to an exercise plan and improve your knee health.

Stationary Bicycle or Elliptical

Whether at your home or at a gym, stationary bicycles and elliptical machines are great low impact exercises to strengthen your knees and get in better shape. Lots of these machines also have workout plans build into them that will simulate riding or running through a course with varied resistance and warm up and cool down periods. Using one of these machines does not require much mental acuity, so this physical exercise time can also act as mental exercise time. You could put on your headphones to listen to an educational podcast or even try out those language tapes that have been collecting dust on the shelf. Your knee surgeon knows that a healthy mind is just as important as a healthy body.

Walking

This may seem simple, but walking may be the best of all of these exercises. Putting one foot in front of the other is something that humans everywhere do every day! Lace up your shoes and hit the trail! Finding a walking buddy or taking your dog is another way to keep yourself and another human or creature fit. Walking is not only fun and easy, but it is a great way to get out and connect with your neighbors and community. Take a rest to stop and chat with the new folks down the street or have a look in that new bakery that just opened up.

These may seem simple, but any knee surgeon would tell you that this combination may be the key to building a sustainable workout routine. The easier something is to do, the more likely you will be to stick to it. So, get out there, get fit and stay fit.
