Long back in Vedic period it is a belief that, Shisupal, who is cousin of Lord Krishna, found these fabrics. After, in the year 1910, a Chanderi muslin saree was brought by a royal family of Chanderi. Later, the weavers of Chanderi started producing these hand spun sarees with the name “Chanderi”. Today, these six yard sarees are popular all over the world only because of their uniqueness. The Chanderi handloom cluster, especially, extracts a lot of time, dedication, patience and craftsmanship in its making. The excellence in fabrics made these sarees very special and unique. By fine weaving and coupling of yarns along with skills of traditional-bound weavers, Chanderi stands the best. Earlier cotton and silk used as base fabrics. Now, we are getting lots of varieties from the weavers. Sico is the latest and richest fabric of Chanderi which is the combination of both silk and cotton along with gold and silver threads. In this the silk warp will be wafted with cotton warp. To get smooth and softness of fabric, weavers make use of Koli, a local wild union used for sizing. And they use 120s cotton for warp and waftings. Natural, vegitable and chemical dyes are used by weavers based on designs to produce artistic patterns. Today, we are getting cotton, silk and sico Chanderi varieties with very intricate and delicate works. Chanderi sarees are well-known for their grand pallu works and rich borders. Weavers intricately design the pallu with gold borders and extraordinary embellishments which are spread all across the six yards. Adornments like lotus roundels, buttis, zari works, stones, kundans and rich pearls are the major attractions made in these sarees. The motifs Nalferma, Jangla, dandidar, Chatai and Mehandi along with basic motifs like flowers, leafs, fruits, trees, peacocks and other geometrical shapes and postures are striking assets of Chanderi Sarees. Chanderi cotton sarees are the best summer wears as well as formal wears of working women. Silk sarees of Chanderi with embroidery works and designs are best suitable for parties, night events, functions, festivals and other grand occasions. Designer Chanderi sico sarees are apt for weddings and bridal ceremonies.
