You’ve donated your hard earned money to a cancer charity to help “find the cure”. You feel good about it because you’re helping these organisations conduct vital research to eradicate this disease that affects almost 1 in 2 of us. But how is your money really being spent? Once you read the rest of this article you might think twice before you donate. Unveiling the Truthwhy i don't support cancer charities Donating money to a cancer charity is a selfless and generous act and there is nothing wrong with that. They are great people just wanting to help others in need. We trust these charities and why wouldn’t we? They look professional, they seem to know what they’re doing and they know all the stats on cancer. The problem lies not in the act of giving but in the fact that we don’t have the slightest clue how our donation is used. We put too much trust in these charities. It would be a different story if charities divulged their financial data but the reality is, most of your money doesn’t go into cancer research. So Where Does My Money Go? A recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald found that 41 cents in the donated dollar of popular charities goes towards fund raising, marketing and communications. For instance, the Make-A-Wish Foundation raised $12.8 million in donations but spent $5.2 million on fund raising, marketing and so on. After expenses, it granted 501 wishes of sick children. I’m sure any of you could do a lot more than grant 501 wishes with $5.2 million. Another example is a charity in the US called Susan G. Komen for the cure. They have partnered with KFC of all businesses to promote breast cancer awareness (see image above). I’m a little dumbfounded. I mean.. Really?? The amount of your donation that goes towards promotions, admin, salaries is disgusting but what’s even more sinister is yet to come. Research For “The Cure” You may not believe this but I believe that if you want to know the truth, follow the money trail – ask yourself who will truly benefit at the end of the day. It is no surprise that cancer charities are well affiliated with pharmaceutical companies. Why? Because most of them were set up by them. You’ve heard the pitch, ”The cure is right around the corner” but in reality most forms of cancer haven’t seen improved survival rates in the past fifty years. Most of your money goes towards drug research, not to find a cure but to patent a drug that treats the symptom. What you are actually doing is funding drug research run by billion dollar companies who will come up with a new drug to patent and eventually sell back to you. Then Who Do I Donate To? Contribution is such an important human need and I believe that everyone needs to contribute in some way to truly feel fulfilled. To ensure your contribution is making maximum impact, look no further than your local area. There are so many beautiful people involved in clinics that promote health naturally through nutrition education, water fasting and exercise programs. The larger the organisation, the more likely your money will get lost. Also, drugs don’t cure, so I would personally steer away from organisations that donate money towards drugs research. If you donate to an organisation, it’s important to find out exactly how your money is spent. You have a right to know so ask. An organisation I believe in is The Gerson Institute. They provide a natural alternative to toxic cancer treatment through education and training. If you know someone suffering from cancer, it’s well worth a look. I know this topic was a little controversial but I hope it gave you a different perspective. Rant over.
