With over 10,000 residential care homes for people aged sixty-five and over in England, it is almost certain that you will know somebody living in a care home, whether they are members of your family or friends. For the majority of people, the move into a care home from a family home is greatly beneficial; it allows the elderly to live comfortably in a residency which provides secure accommodation and personal assistance, such as aid with personal hygiene and dressing. Care homes are welcoming environments for the older generation to build friendships and socialise with similar individuals. On Friday 20th June, residential care homes across the UK are requesting for members of the local community to come in and spend some time getting to know the residents. This national fun-filled day also took place last year and was a complete success. This is the perfect opportunity to see how successfully the care home operates. Volunteers to assist and keep the residents company are warmly welcomed; the aim of the day is to celebrate the older generation, build relationships with people in the local area and promote high-quality social care practice. However, National Care Home Open Day is not just for the older generation. Residential care homes will be welcoming all ages to come and participate in the celebrations. There will be a multitude of activities taking place in the majority of homes across the UK; from BBQ’s and cream teas to sports games and musical performances. Andrea Sutcliffe, CQC’s Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care has commented on the care home awareness day: “Whether you are looking at care options for a family member or just want to make a connection with the community – the open day is a great opportunity to visit your local care home. People can see what goes on, get involved and gain a better understanding of these really important services.” “I hope National Care Home Open Day will help to break down barriers between care homes and the community and forge lasting links for the future which will benefit everyone." You can support National Care Home Open Day by liking the Facebook page or using the Twitter hashtag #NCHOD2014. The day is sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Society, Social Care Institute for Excellence, Care Quality Commission, Skills for Care and many more. So go on, seek out your nearest participating residential care homes, come along to support the local community and brighten up someone’s day.
