If you’re someone who suffers from allergies (and we mean really suffers, not just a little bit of a sniffle now and again), you’ll know how much of a pain it can be. It’s really annoying, it’s really difficult to furnish your home, and even staying away can put massive strain on your poor immune system. Curtains, floor coverings, bedding and mattresses all seem as if they’re out to get you, and after a while the whole experience can be more than a touch wearing. But have you heard of Flotex flooring? It’s the only textile floor covering which is endorsed by Allergy UK (and for good reason, but we’ll get to that later). Now what you might not have realised is that even if you haven’t heard of Flotex flooring, you’re more than likely to have come across it at some point on your travels. It looks a whole heap like carpet, and even feels similar, but it’s a very different product. This particular floor covering is often found in classrooms, gyms and hospitals. That’s because it’s a lot easier to clean than it might look, making it a prevalent option in the commercial sector. Why Flotex? Not quite a carpet and certainly not a vinyl, this is a hybrid product. It has the same qualities you’d expect from something like vinyl, meaning that it is easy to clean, fully washable, and you can simple wipe up stains. It can stay looking as good as new for years and years. So where does the hybrid element come into the mix? Well, this is still a textiles floor. It looks more like carpet than anything else, but the backing is waterproof and rather than using cotton looped fibres in its pile (which can absorb allergens making them very difficult to remove, or simply trap them within its weave), Flotex flooring is constructed from straight, densely packed synthetic fibres, which trap dust and pollutants so they don’t release when it’s walked over. With a hard floor surface, there’s nothing to trap these particles at all. Flotex flooring not only traps the particles, but a simple run over with a vacuum cleaner will take a huge amount of the hard work out of getting the floor covering back up and ready for use. Allergy UK recognise that this product is hugely innovative, and means that allergy sufferers can still enjoy the warmth and comfort of a textile floor, without having to worry it will set them up for a sneezing fit.
