Junghans is a renowned German watch factory, situated in Schramberg. Opened in 1861, the company, founded by Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law Jakob Zeller-Tobler, specialised in the manufacture of individual watch parts. It was 5 years later that Junghans watches were first designed and constructed. The company soon rose to fame and in 1903 became the world’s largest clock and watch factory; producing high quality, affordable products and selling them all over the world. Over the years, Junghans grew from strength to strength, expanding their building and workforce with more than 3000 employees producing over three million watches. It was in the early 1950’s that Junghans decided they wanted a product to be created by a designer; namely, Max Bill. Max Bill was born in 1908 and studied at the prestigious Bauhaus Design School. Renowned for being a painter, sculptor, graphic artist, architect and product designer, he was the perfect choice to design the first designer kitchen clock for Junghans. Following this success, Max Bill went on to design the first designer watch from Junghans. The classic and sleek design, paired with state of the art technology, meant this was the first of many and led to a successful partnership between Max Bill and Junghans. The legacy lives on today and 150 years later, Junghans Max Bill watches are still in production. The elegant, clean, timeless designs that Max Bill created continue to be manufactured and remain very popular.
