In simple words a pressure regulating valve is the kind of valve which is allotted to cut off the supply of any kind of material when a specific amount of pressure is reached. When supplying gas or liquid from cylinders, a pressure regulator is used so that it can cut off the supply of the gas or liquid when a limit is reached. It is very important to use such regulators because you can never know when the cylinder is overflowing the gas into the target which may result in accidents. Practical uses: The most common place where a pressure regulating valve can be seen is at a garage. Everyone knows that cars run on tires and that tires require air. So when you are at a garage pumping air into the tires of your car, how will you know when to stop, and if there is too much air in tires it can lead to dangerous mishaps. So pressure regulators are used. After a specific amount of air has been pumped from the cylinder, the pressure regulator stops the flow so that there is neither too much air into the tires nor too less. Importance: You may not notice it, but the use of pressure regulating valves in everyday life is pretty common. It is used by water supplying companies to keep a control over the flow of water in houses. It is used in air conditioners to keep an eye on the machine so that it does not cool too much. It is even used in cars. The oil flow into the engines is to be kept under control so that too much oil is not flowing into it. If the flow of oil is too much, then the engine may fail. Single state and double state: Pressure regulating valve can be classified into a single stage and double stage regulators. What a single stage regulator does is that it uses a spring to control the flow of gas or liquid from the cylinder. When two single state regulators are used, it’s called a double state regulator.
