ATHENS, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Greek public debt increased in the first quarter of this year to 310.384 billion euros (about 385 billion U.S. dollars) from 298.524 billion euros at the end of 2009, Greek authorities announced on Wednesday. On March 31 this year, Greece had cash reserves of 7.519 billion euros, compared to 1.1 billion euros at the end of 2009, the Greek General Accounting Office added in a statement. Also on Wednesday, Greece paid old debt amounting to 8.5 billion euros, the Greek Public Debt Management Agency announced in another statement. It was a 10-year bond that fell due on Wednesday and had caused headaches to Greek officials. Debt-ridden Greece managed to fully meet its financing obligations this month thanks to a 16 billion euros financial aid from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Last week, Athens received 5.5 billion euros as the first installment of a loan from the IMF and on Tuesday another 14.5 billion euros from other eurozone countries. Faced with the prospect of the spread of a severe economic crisis from Greece to other European countries, EU partners and the IMF agreed to grant Athens a sum of 110 billion euros in loans with low interest rates over the next three years. In exchange, the Greek government pledged to fully implement immediately a harsh austerity program and major reforms in the country in order to cut the public debt and the budget deficit and exit the crisis.
