STOCKHOLM, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- The 2011 European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress opened Friday in Stockholm with the theme of integrating basic and translational science, surgery, radiotherapy, medical oncology, advocacy and care to treat various cancers. "Our dedicated efforts have gathered together some of the best new cancer research studies from all over the world, and resulted in an impressively high number of quality abstracts containing practice-changing studies of new and significant scientific importance making headlines for the first time in the well known cancer organizations," Michael Baumann, congress chair and ECCO President, said at the opening of the biannual congress. "Some of the many other program highlights delivering the latest advances and insight in scientific and clinical research, patient management and practice include teaching lectures, scientific and educational symposia and special sessions," Baumann said to the participants attending the up to 1000 sessions of seminars and presentations during the congress. He said that the grand exhibitions during the five-day congress will provide opportunities for participants to network and exchange ideas to gain insights into cutting-edge technology and latest healthcare solutions within the field of oncology. "It is also a chance for researchers and clinicians to talk and debate with industry on cancer treatment," Baumann said. The scientific programs include basic science, central nervous system, breast cancer, advanced disease and early disease, cancer in the older patients, prostate cancer, gynaecological cancer, head and neck cancer and gastrointestinal malignancies colorectal cancer and non cancer.
