Hydraulic cylinders or hydraulic motors are a type of mechanical actuators that are operated by some energy source. The hydraulic cylinder is used to generate a unidirectional force from a unidirectional stroke. These cylinders are used for a wide range of applications, primarily in engineering vehicles. Hydraulic cylinders operate by obtaining power from some kind of pressurized hydraulic fluid. This hydraulic fluid is oil in most cases. The cylinder comprises of a barrel that is attached to a piston. The piston has a piston rod that allows a user to move it front and back. While the main function of the piston is to separate pressure zones within the barrel, the function of the piston rod is to connect the hydraulic motor with the machine component that carries out the work. There are numerous types of hydraulic cylinders available in the market. Based on their design, hydraulic cylinders are categorized into welded body cylinders and tie rod cylinders. Welded body cylinders are more frequently used than the tie rod cylinders as they tend to have several advantages. They not only fit better in any type of machinery, but also easily lend to diverse customizations. Hydraulic equipments such as bulldozers, lift-gates, forklift trucks, oil rigs, cranes, etc. all incorporate the use of welded body cylinders. Different types of special hydraulic cylinders are used for industrial purposes. These include telescopic cylinders, plunger cylinders and differential cylinders. Some of them have been discussed below in brief: Telescopic cylinders Telescopic cylinders use the piston rod as a piston barrel and another piston rod is employed to act as the main piston rod. This is so done because sometimes the length of this hydraulic cylinder that includes the stroke, the bottom thickness, the piston thickness and the head and length of the connections doesn’t fit in the overall machine. Telescopic cylinders are more costly than normal cylinders. Single acting telescopic cylinders are easily available in the market. However, the double acting telescopic cylinders need to be manufactured specially. Differential cylinders These cylinders operate like ordinary cylinders while pulling. While they can be made like normal cylinders, a special control needs to be attached to them. Plunger cylinders Plunger cylinders are types of hydraulic cylinders that come without a piston. There can also be models that include the piston but lack the seals. This type of cylinders can be used only as pushing cylinders. These models usually have a very thick piston rod.
