Unique chic furniture is a phrase that's been coined recently to describe a current trend in painted, shabby-chic style pieces, making them bespoke for each home. Creating the unique chic look usually involves painting second-hand, vintage or antique furniture that is no longer wanted in its current state. Dark wooden furniture seems to be out and painted pieces are in! Painting older furniture is an easy way to get a fabulous, unique, solid and hard-wearing piece that looks good and suits your individual taste and décor. There are several ways to go about achieving the unique chic look but buying solid wooden antique, vintage or retro furniture and then painting it yourself in your chosen colour is on way. You can pick up second-hand or 'pre-loved' furniture at car boot sales, auctions, eBay, local listing directories such as Gum Tree and Friday Ad, or second-hand stores and antique emporiums. It is not necessarily going to be cheap to find the piece you want as many people are now catching on to this method of creating unique, shabby chic pieces. There are plenty of bargains still to be had if you look hard enough, and it really depends on what piece of furniture you're looking for, as some things have become more popular than others. Some of the most popular pieces of unique chic furniture seem to be bedroom furniture, such as painted wardrobes and chests of drawers, but kitchen furniture such as painted dressers and sideboards are also having a huge renaissance. The country cottage or vintage farmhouse style that is re-emerging as a popular choice for interior decor is leading the way in the rebirth of shabby chic shops all over the country. These shops are pushing up the prices of unpainted furniture as they are snapping up many of the best pieces at auctions. However, if you do manage to find yourself a bargain it's relatively easy to paint a piece of furniture yourself, as long as you have the space, the time and the inclination! You'll need somewhere to paint that it doesn't matter if you drop any paint on the floor or splash it up the walls, or flick it on other things in the room! Outdoors would be ideal but you can't always rely on the weather, and don't forget you'll need to leave any painted piece of furniture to dry for some amount of time. To achieve the best results when painting furniture you'll need to sand it down first, however this isn't always necessary if you use a matt emulsion as a base, and apply several coats! You can then apply a couple of layers of any eggshell finish paint as your top coat. Egg-shell is the best finish to select as it is hard-wearing and suitable for painting onto wood and furniture. Many brands do egg-shell paint now, but one of the most popular is probably Farrow & Ball, as it offers such a wide selection of colours, many of them very traditional colours, so perfect for the shabby chic look. It is also excellent quality an easy to apply. If you don't have the time, inclination or space to paint your own furniture but would still like some unique chic furniture for your home you can always buy already painted pieces. There are now shops and online stores that offer to paint antique, vintage or retro furniture in a colour of your choice. You can also buy modern reproduction furniture that is made to look like older, painted furniture but it is unlikely to be of such good quality as genuine antique or vintage solid pieces. If you want affordable but solid, long-lasting, hard-wearing unique chic furniture the best thing to do is to search online and find the right piece for your home. Many stores will deliver the furniture to you so you won't even have to go and collect it.
