(Xinhua/Reuters Photo) TOKYO, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed sharply higher Friday with the key Nikkei index up 2.72 percent. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average jumped 244.08 points to 9,206.75. The broader Topix index was up 19.59 points, or 2.42 percent, to 830.39. Trading volume on the main section contracted to 3,318.39 million shares from 4,106.90 million Thursday. On the First Section advancing shares beat declining ones 1,545 to 110, with 23 others remaining unchanged. Japan employs new tactics to avert nuclear catastrophe TOKYO, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Japan has adopted increasingly elaborate measures to cool down overheating fuel rods at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in the face of mounting panic over radiation exposure.
