BAGHDAD, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. soldier died in a non- combat incident in northern Iraq, the U.S. military said Monday. "A U.S. service member died Sunday in a non-hostile incident in northern Iraq," a military statement said without giving further details about how and where exactly the incident took place. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, the statement said. The latest announcement is the first for September, as the past August was the first month since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 that no U.S. soldiers were killed in the country. The latest casualty takes the overall U.S. death toll in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion to 4,475, according to media count based on Pentagon figures. In mid 2010, U.S. troops in Iraq were reduced to below 47,000 soldiers. Washington said the remaining U.S. troops in Iraq were conducting support and training missions. U.S. military forces are to pull out completely from Iraq by the end of 2011 according to a security pact named Status of Forces Agreement signed late in 2008 between Baghdad and Washington. However, Iraq is reportedly negotiating with United States to let a small force of U.S. troops to stay in Iraq beyond the deadline only for training Iraqi forces.
