ACCRA, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- At least two miners were killed and dozens of others trapped in a gold mine in Ghana on Thursday morning when the pit they were working in caved in at Prestea, about 312 km west of the capital Accra. Eye witness said one rescued miner had been sent to a government hospital in Takoradi, capital of the West Region. Isaac Kamerling, urban council chairman for the area, confirmed the incident to media, saying that rescue work is going on. He said the mine was an old and abandoned one, which might have led to the collapse. Following the incident, other miners, however, went back into the pit to look for remnants of gold and the weak walls crumbled on them. Rescue efforts had been at a slow pace as local rescuers were afraid to go into the pit and were using shovels to dig in search of the victims. The police had been informed and had dispatched troops to help in the rescue effort.
