What is a cataract?

Cataract is a clouding of the eye's lens - the part of the eye responsible for focusing light and producing clear, sharp images. A cataract occurs when the crystalline lens of the eye becomes cloudy or opaque as a result of age, illness, or trauma. This cloudiness can interfere with the eye's natural ability to direct light and focus an image on the retina. As a result, individuals with cataracts frequently experience a loss of vision. What are the different types of cataract surgery?

The standard cataract surgical procedure is performed in a hospital or in an ambulatorysurgery center on an outpatient basis. The most common form of cataract surgery today involves a process called phacoemulsification. With the use of an operating microscope, your surgeon will make a very small incision in the surface of the eye in or near the cornea. A thinultrasound probe, which is often confusedwith a laser by patients, is inserted into the eye and uses ultrasonic vibrations to dissolve (phacoemulsify) the clouded lens. These tiny fragmented pieces are then suctioned out through the same ultrasound probe. Once the cataract is removed, an artificial lens is placed into the thin capsular bag that the cataract previously occupied. This lens is essential to help your eye focus after surgery.

How are cataracts treated?

The cataract is treated by surgery. An eye surgeon will remove your cloudy lens and in most cases, replace it with a clear, man-made focusing lens (intraocular lens implant, or IOL). The replacement lens implant remains permanently inside your eye and does not degrade.

Cataract surgery is usually a day case procedure, which means that you will go HOME on the day of your operation. However, you may wish to arrange for someone to stay overnight with you at home on the day of surgery.

What Can I Expect From Cataract SURGERY

During Cataract Surgery, Which Is Usually Performed Under Local Anesthesia As An Outpatient Procedure, The Cloudy Lens Is Removed From The Eye. In Most Cases, The Focusing Power Of The Natural Lens Is Restored By Replacing It With A Permanent Intraocular Lens Implant.

During the first week after surgery, it generally is recommended that the patient keep his or her eye covered at all times, either with eyeglasses or an eye shield, to protect it from being bumped or rubbed. A small amount of pressure can easily open the incision, and protecting the eye prevents this. Also, it is recommended that the patient refrain from (a) bending with the head below the waist, (b) lifting more than 10 pounds, and (c) straining (on the toilet, for example) to the point of holding one's breath. All of these activities increase the pressure inside the eye and can open the incision.

Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops are used in the weeks after cataract surgery to help prevent infection and control inflammation.

After the surgery, the patient is instructed to use anti-inflammatory and antibiotic eye-drops for up to two weeks (depending on the inflammation status of the eye and some other variables). The eye surgeon will judge, based on each patient's idiosyncrasies, the time length to use the eye drops. The eye will be mostly recovered within a week, and complete recovery should be expected in about a month. The patient should not participate in contact/extreme sports until cleared to do so by the eye surgeon.
