In the year 1841 James Braid created the term Hypnosis, before that it had been known as Mesmerism. The idea of hypnosis being a self-induced frame of mind, instead of one reliant on the hypnotist alone was now becoming more plausible. What this meant was people could now learn how to harness this method to enhance their lives. Sigmond Freud started using hypnosis to supplement his ground breaking work on psychoanalysis coming to the end of the 1800's, surprisingly he didn't see the benefits of it. His family are reported to have said that, much later in life reported that he definitely wouldn't have stopped experimenting with hypnotherapy, if he could have known known as much about it earlier in his career. A well known method of therapy was created by Milton Erickson circa the 50's. This was known as indirect hypnosis, it distanced itself from the more classical approaches used by previous hypnotists. Psychologist Milton Erickson was famous for his work with subjects who had trouble entering hypnosis with other practitioners. A very different style of hypnosis was being taught to doctors and dentists during the same time period by Dave Elman. Dave Elman taught a very traditional approach to hypnosis that was useful for anaesthesia and in the field of hypnotherapy. His rapid hypnotic methods are currently favoured by hypnotists today. The late great Ormond McGill, was known as "The Dean”, author of "The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis” and was also well known for his rapid therapy, in which he excelled. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. Ormond passed away in 2005. A major contributor to hypnosis approaches used today, Gil Boyne passed away in 2010. A great admirer of Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, Gill took Dave Elmans teachings and formed a unique hypno-theraputic system. The collections known as 'Transforming Therapies' was the synthesis of his learnings in hypnosis. At the moment hypnotists have more resources at their fingertips than they can even digest.
