The process of deep hole drilling started during the revolutionary era when guns and armaments of various sizes were required for mass production. Since then, deep hole drilling has found wide applications in the fields of medicine, fossil fuel survey and retrieval, aircraft, vehicle manufacturing and metal cutting companies. The types of drilling machines that are used in these industries are of advanced technology. This is important since the very concept of deep hole drilling dictates that deep straight circular apertures be created on a work piece. For an aperture to be classified as a deep hole, the depth of the hole must be at least 5 times higher than its diameter. Accordingly, power equipment like deep hole drilling machines require precautionary measures in order to avoid workplace accidents. Six safety recommendations are therefore given below. Tool selection. Baseline safety starts with the selection of the appropriate deep hole drilling machine. This depends on the dynamics of the material to be drilled, the size and specifications of the intended hole product, number of operators on site and the time interval between each grinding. At present, BTA system and gun drilling machine are the two most common types of drilling machines used in the market. Knowledge of machinery. Once the appropriate drilling machine is selected, it is then important for the user to be immaculately aware of the machine’s specifications. For example, the operator of the drilling machine must know how to delivery fluid and coolant into the work piece without destroying the integrity of the created aperture. Calibration and machine maintenance. Prior to the start of every drilling operation, the machinists have to make it a habit to check for physical signs of deformity or deterioration. Every suspicious cracks or modifications must be documented and reported immediately in order to prevent potential batch mistakes. Also, routine calibration of the machine is necessary so as to ensure that the promised depth to diameter ratio is obtained. Safety clothing. Work clothes must be worn whenever the employees are inside the drilling premises. In the event that field drilling is being done, all concerned employees must wear protective clothing. This includes well-fitting thick coverall. Eye protection. Aside from the clothes, it is also important for the workers to wear appropriate eye gears made of glasses or plastic. This will protect them from chips debris or any minute particles that are accidently ejected by the drilling machine. Workplace cleanliness. While drilling, the worktable must be free of unnecessary materials like wrenches or other related tools. The stack of work piece that are next to be drilled must be properly positioned near the machine but not on top of the work table. Appropriate holding device for the work piece must also be used to protect the hand of the employees from being grabbed in the machine once mishandling happens. Occupational safety during deep hole drilling events can be evaded once the aforementioned actions are fulfilled. In general, the efficiency of the machine, the responsibility and competence of the workers and the coordination of the team will result to successful and protected drilling measures.
