Bring tranquillity to your home with Asian-inspired décor

Home Repair
The advent of Asian-inspired home décor comes as no surprise, especially in a time when more and more people are trapped in the vicious circle of modern life and need a space to retreat after a long day, an oasis of relaxation that focuses on the values of balance of tranquillity. In Japan, and Asian culture in general, home is a sacred place, a place that should reflect the harmony of nature and inspire the idea of calm and peace of mind. The Japanese invest a lot of time in combining various styles, patterns and elements, but the major difference between their endeavour and other Western interior design trends is that they don’t necessarily do this for the sake of aesthetics. On the contrary, they want to achieve an idea, a state of mind, harmonize elements and build their own personal idea of an oasis. Beauty should be graceful, delicate, effortless. It should reveal itself gradually, with the subtlety of a Japanese fan, not ostentatiously. Japanese décor does not want to stand out, it wants to soothe. It draws inspiration from nature and philosophy and it takes a meticulous and tasteful person to master it. Here is a short guide to the predominant aesthetic values in Asian home décor and how you can achieve it by using elements such as scatter cushions, bedding and wall decals.

First of all, nature is a never-ending source of inspiration and traditional Japanese homes try to create backgrounds that recreate landscapes. Neutral colours are preferable, because they allow you to easily incorporate elements afterwards, without reaching a clash of colours or patterns. Choose beige, grey or blue when painting the walls and, if possible, go for wall decals or custom paintings that depict classic Asian motifs. The prevalence of neutral-coloured backgrounds doesn’t mean that you entire room has to feel plain and washed out. You can add pops of colour, but do that in an elegant way. For example, you can choose vibrant cherry blossom or bamboo prints on something like a Japanese style cushion. This is a practical idea, because if you get bored of a particular design, you can easily replace it, without having to redo the entire room. Bedding is another convenient way of adding a pop of colour to your room and you can find many amazing patterns and prints online.

Balance in Asian style is seen not only at the level of colours and patterns, but also at the level of textures. This means that you have to harmonise materials: you wither go for wood, stone or glass. Mixing them could be a bit tricky and might result in a non-homogenous result. Last, but not least, remember that Asian cultures consists of several sub-styles, so do not confuse Japanese décor with the Chinese or Indian one, because there are very few similarities between them and there are very few ways in which you can combine them and get beautiful results. Japanese décor offers limitless possibilities and you can have an understated or vibrant house without going over the top.
