If you ever find yourself in paradise... Paradise, Michigan, that is, breathe in the freshness of Lake Superior as you listen to the waves roll upon the shoreline. When you can pull yourself away from the land of Paradise, head east on M-123 to yet another one of the many Michigan attractions in the Upper Peninsula: Tahquamenon State Park. Tahquamenon State Park is just under 50,000 acres, making it the second largest park in Michigan. It hosts four campgrounds with both rustic and modern camping sites. Year-round trails offer those that cross-country ski, snowshoe, snowmobile, hike, backpack, or bird watch the opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the peace and quiet of the woods and perhaps glimpse wildlife. But aside of its solitude and opportunities, the park has two main attractions: The Lower Falls and The Upper Falls. Below are a few fun facts: The Lower Falls • Consist of a string of 5 smaller waterfalls that descend around an island. • River bank viewing works well, or row a boat a short distance to the Falls. Rowboats are available for a rental fee. • Once on the island, you can walk in the falls, get up close and personal with your camera, or hike the island. The Upper Falls • The Upper Falls are four miles upstream from the Lower Falls. There is a walking path that connect the two. You may choose to hike between the two waterfalls, or they are both easily accessible by vehicle. • "One of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi" boast many websites on the subject. • The water descends fifty feet down to the Tahquamenon River. • The Falls measure 200 feet across. • 50,000 gallons of water fall per second. Clearly the Upper Falls are the most photographed Falls of the two. They are breathtaking year-round. They are easy to visit with paved walking paths, observations decks, stairs that will take you down to the top of the waterfall, and it is handicap accessible. And if all this exercise makes you hungry, there is the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery and Pub at the site of the Upper Falls. They serve excellent burgers and a delicious cheese soup, along with gourmet selections as well, and the Pub offers their own micro brews and domestic beer and any other beverage that may interest any member of the family. The restaurant's decor resembles a cozy lodge with a fireplace and has a full stocked gift shop.
