Gears are essentially part of almost every mechanical device. They are used in the rotating components of equipment to bring a positive transmission of power through transmission. They always work in pairs, not individually. One rotation of the ‘drive’ gear causes multiple rotations of the ‘driven’ gear. Gear can increase or decrease the speed. There are multiple classifications of gears, but the most popular one is based on the axis. Different types of gears and its applications are described below: Parallel Axis In this type of gears, axis of both gears is in parallel with each other. · Spur: In Spur gear system gears have straight teeth parallel to the axis. They are slow speed gears but can be used at high speed if noise isn’t a disturbing factor. They are simple in design and economic in manufacturing and maintenance. · Helical: In helical gears, teeth are inclined towards the axis of the shaft forming a helix. They are high-speed gears with a high load-bearing capacity. The motion of gears is smooth and quiet as compared to spur gears. · Double Helical: Double helical gears have two sets of teeth arranged in a V shape. They bring smooth and quiet movement with high efficiency. These gears are used in industrial and automobile gearboxes. They are used in steel rolling mills as well. Perpendicular Axis In this type, axis of both gears is perpendicular to each other. · Non-intersecting: Worm gear and Hypoid gear are typical examples of this type where the axis does not intersect with each other. Worm gears transmit power at the right angle, and their shafts lie in parallel planes. One gear always has screw threads making it vibration-free, smooth, and quiet. · Intersecting: Straight Bevel Gears and Spiral Bevel gears are examples of intersecting gears. Here, the axis intersects at a certain point. In straight bevel gears, the bevels are straight. They can have different angles, but 90 degrees is the commonest one. In spiral bevel gears, the teeth are oblique. They are smoother and quieter than spiral bevels. Non-intersecting gears are used in elevators, and in the rear axle of heavy automobiles. Intersecting ones are used in the differential mechanism of a vehicle. Planetary axis It is a complicated and interesting gear system with three important components; an internal gear, a sun gear, and planet gears. It can be used in multiple configurations for achieving multiple output speeds. Different types of gears and its applications make the movement of components easy and efficient. No mechanical device with rotating parts can be imagined without gears. The gear manufacturing plants in India are plenty. India is one of the highest volume gear components exporters in the world.
