The smell of barbecue, baseball games, and sultry heat can only mean one thing - it's time to check your pool chemicals! Remove, Clean, Store the Pool Cover Sounds obvious, right? Not so fast. Too many people simply rip the cover off and toss it to the side. Taking a few minutes to spray down the cover can help prevent (and clean) mold buildup, among other nasty impediments. Once finished, neatly fold and store in a dry space, such as a shed or in the garage. Next you'll want to thoroughly clean and vacuum the tank's base and walls. Do not fear! You will more than likely find that slugs and other slimy critters have moved in. Be nice to the little fellows and find them a new home. If you are particularly squeamish, get one of the neighborhood kids to help you. They like slimy things. Once you have evicted everyone, including the algaes, give your tank a thorough spray paying particular attention to the tile (if applicable). Filling The Pool This can be a slow process. The prescribed rate at which a pool should be filled is about one foot per hour for smaller pools (under five feet) and a tad more for larger tanks. Test the water's pH balance with a strip. The pH range should register between 7.4 to 7.7 for vinyl or tile finishes and 7.3 to 7.5 for fiberglass. If it's too low, adding certain pool chemicals will help increase your levels; if too high, there may be too much alkalinity in the water. Contact a pool chemicals dealer to find out which products you need, as H2O tends to vary chemically from neighborhood to neighborhood. Opening For Business! So the sun is making the water sparkle, and you're ready for a dip! But hold on a minute, you still need to have your H2O analyzed by an expert. This only takes a few minutes. Next, scrub the deck with soap and water. You don't want to be walking on a dirty deck in bare feet do you? Give it a quick scrub and rinse, your guests will be happy knowing you took the time to do such a thing. Weekly/Monthly Maintenance Checking your pool chemicals regularly is necessary! You'll also want to 'shock' the pool about every two weeks to keep organic contaminants from ruining the fun. Check chlorine and pH levels routinely. Check the pump and seals about once a month. Keep an eye on the handrails and other features, such as the diving board and stairway and keep the walkway clear of toys or flotation devices. Jump In For a Splash! You are ready to go! But first some basic safety rules: No running, no diving, and no bad attitudes! Enjoy your summer and be sure to check with your local dealer to find out which pool chemicals you'll need to keep the summer fun splashing ahead!
