In an age of increasingly Outsourced Payroll UK like that offered by SAIL, it seems that much the same is proving to be the case for digital and big data expertise (for those less acquainted with “big data” it is the use of technology to analyse big data sets to identify trends, patterns and associations, particularly related to human behaviour and interactions). That was at least a key finding of the Harvey Nash/KPMG 2015 CIO Survey, which discovered that amid ever-heightening digital innovation, large companies are increasingly likely to turn to contractors with skills in these areas. According to the research, many organisations are finding themselves left behind in the digital and big data innovation race, with many lacking a comprehensive digital strategy and the necessary related skills. Although hiring efforts have been made, there has still been a one-third increase in the size of the skills gap since 2013, the ContractorCalculator website has reported. Among those to talk up the chances of contractors in big data and digital in light of the survey is ContractorCalculator CEO Dave Chaplin, who commented: "Contractors who can acquire the right skills and then target clients and market their digital and big data capabilities effectively can look forward to a strong forward pipeline of lucrative contracts." Further good news for those contractors is the intention of six in every seven CIOs to up their expenditure on such independent professionals. Furthermore, only one in 10 respondents expressed a belief that digital would not have an impact on their company in the future. The CIO report gathered responses from nearly 4,000 IT leaders in more than 50 countries, in what is thought to be the world's biggest IT leadership survey. Chaplin added: "Half of CIOs are increasingly using contractors to supplement skills they cannot find in-house. That leaves the door wide open for skilled contractors to step inside and fill that void." He also noted with interest the "huge" decline of the tendency of organisations to use contractors to save money, with only a quarter still doing so. This, he said, indicated that "The role of contractors is evolving into something far more significant." The survey ranked the skills that were in greatest demand, with big data analytic skills figuring at number one. It is now nearly six times higher than the next scarcest skill - change management - showing that if there was ever a time for contractors in big data to update their training and hunt for new opportunities, this is it.
