The ruins as well as the drawings of the monument of the “January 28” Anti-Japanese Aggression Battle in Shanghai and Nanjing, which was once erected in Yuhuatai (the Rain Flower Terrace), have been discovered recently in Nanjing. It might be the very first anti-Japanese monument with verified date in China. During the Anti-Japanese Aggression Battle in Shanghai and Nanjing in early 1932, General Zhang Zhizhong led the 87th and 88th divisions to come to the aid in Shanghai and Nanjing. The monument was established to commemorate the martyred soldiers of the 87th Division. Over the years, only some brief descriptions in the historical data of Yuhuatai district recorded its presence in a hill to the northeast of Yuhuatai. After the Japanese army seized Nanjing, the monument was destroyed by Japanese soldiers. Some relevant experts have recently discovered among the files of Taiwan Republic the "Tombstone Epigraph" composed by Zhang Zhizhong and written by Song Xilian in June of 1933. According to the Epigraph, the full name of the monument was “The Memorial Tower of the Martyred Generals and Soldiers of the 87th Division in the Anti-Japanese Aggression Battle in Shanghai and Nanjing”. The tower was constructed and completed in the summer of 1933. Prior to it, there had been no record of any other construction of anti-Japanese Aggression monuments. With this thin clue, volunteer students from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) conducted a fruitful field search. The site of the monument ruins was found on a hill behind Erquanhou Mountain to the northeast of the Yuhuatai Martyr Memorial Park, where the tower steps and platforms still survived.
