If you’ve been reaching for Diet Coke and artificial sweeteners in an attempt to reduce sugar in your diet, it turns out you’re merely swapping one poison for another. Aspartame, you may know as one of the key ingredients in Equal and Splenda, is the number one most harmful food additive on the market, causing 75% of all reported additive-triggered reactions. The range of symptoms is so wide that even if you’ve been affected, you might have contributed it to something else. So let’s look at some of the reactions it causes and why they happen…and then leave it up to you whether aspartame is something you want to continue using. Some of aspartame’s side effects manifest in an immediate and noticeable way. These include (but are not limited to): Nausea Seizures Heart palpitations Vertigo Rashes Tinnitus Joint pain The fact that these symptoms appear soon after ingestion makes the cause of the reaction a little simpler for a doctor to diagnose (or for the patient to connect their dots on their own). However, other symptoms are more subtle and can take much longer for victims to notice, including: Weight gain Depression Memory loss Anxiety attacks Fatigue Loss of taste Insomnia These can be equally scary (if not more so), since it’s not immediately clear that they are health issues that need addressing, meaning that the triggering behaviour of aspartame consumption persists without diagnosis, and the problem worsens. Those already suffering from certain chronic diseases are placed at even higher risk, as aspartame can worsen the condition of people with illnesses like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, fibromyalgia, and others. So why does this happen? Aspartame was approved by the TGA, wasn’t it? Can it really be that dangerous? Unfortunately, it can. There are plenty of unsafe products that are perfectly legal (look at tobacco); it’s just that some are less talked about than others. That’s why it’s up to those of us who do know about the dangers to spread the word. One of the reasons aspartame is able to cause damage to the human body is that it literally contains poison. 10% of aspartame is comprised of methanol (aka wood alcohol), which turns into formaldehyde (a deadly neurotoxin) during digestion. Once absorbed, methanol builds up in the body, which over time leads to methanol poisoning. This involves many of the symptoms listed above, and over time can lead to death. Even if aspartame was methanol-free, however, it still wouldn’t be safe. Aspartame consumption raises blood plasma levels of chemicals called “aspartate” and “glutamate”. In excess amounts, these two chemicals begin to destroy neurons in the brain, and if left unchecked can lead to chronic illness (in everyone, but particularly in infants, children, the elderly, and pregnant women). And that’s all. 50% of aspartame is phenylalanine, a chemical linked to decreasing serotonin (the “happy” chemical) and paving the way for emotional disorders. Another chemical, diketopiperazine, appears in the body as a result of aspartame being metabolised…and this one is linked to brain tumours. I hope by now it’s clear that you need to cut aspartame (and all artificial sweeteners) out of your life. But resist the urge to go back to traditional processed sugar, which acidises the body and causes a whole host of health problems on its own. Instead, focus on feeding your body natural, healthy foods. You won’t regret ditching the chemicals. Tell me, do you choose diet options to try and steer away from sugar?
