The electrical box refers to that particular spot in your house where the connection from the grid enters your home. It is from here that the breaker box divides up the source to go to different areas of the home. While this is supposed to be a very basic fact, there are people who don’t know where the breaker is so they can turn it on or off as need may arise. The unfortunate thing is that very few homeowners actually know the importance of electrical upgrades that are necessitated by the age of their home wiring system; most people don’t know that an aged electrical panel is actually a fire hazard they keep on the wall of their homes. If your home was built more than 15 years ago, there is no doubt that there is need for a service upgrade. You may have head from someone that most insurance companies will provide a cover for any home where they believe that the electrical panel is old until the homeowner gets a commercial electrician to do an electrical upgrade. This can be compared to keeping a can of gasoline behind the wall of your house and hoping against hope that a fire will not break out someday soon. The insurance company will not want to have their inspector try to dig into the walls so as to check whether there any worn out materials; in most cases they will only check your outlets and when they see the old 2 pronged instead of the 3 pronged outlet, they will have no doubt that there could also be leaks and termites behind those walls. Today, building regulations require that the electrical panel is attached outside the house such that in case there is a fire outbreak, the firemen are able to switch off power from the house. Since this regulation has been going on for the last 15 or so years, most of the newer houses have the electric boxes outside the house. When you look at many homes, there are those that are actually older than 40 years; this means that majority of the homes we are living in have a need for electrical upgrades so they can be compatible with the electrical load that is require to run most of the amenities we have at home today. When it comes to service upgrades, whether your electric panel is inside or outside the house, what you must realize is that most of the wiring for the older houses was intended for a lower electric load. Commercial electrician who worked 20 years ago only had to wire homes to take care of the TV, Fridge, water heater, washer and dryer and perhaps the HVAC. The typical electric panel of that time could easily accommodate those things. But move back 35 years ago and you will agree we didn’t have microwave ovens and many new appliances and you will see why an electrical upgrades are imminent in most homes today.
