A commercial driver’s license, or better known as CDL, is necessary for drivers of vehicles carrying 26,000 pounds or 10,000 pounds plus any sort of trailer. This also includes any vehicle that carries risky materials with warning devices that are currently under transportation regulations. The CDL is also needed for drivers driving a vehicle with more than 16 passengers (including the driver). Vehicles needing a CDL include tow trucks, tractor-trailers, buses, and others. CDL’s were brought up in 1986 to boost highway safety as lawmakers wanted to make sure that truck drivers were qualified to drive CMVs or commercial motor vehicles. The state of California is trying to filter out drivers that are not fit to drive big trucks on highways. This act provided states nationwide to issue commercial driver’s licenses, however, the federal government has mandated some requirements that must be met when CDLs are issued.
