If you lived in England in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, and were a fan of alt-rock, there was no escaping the sounds of mod-revivalist band The Jam. With their punky attitude and jangly guitars, they led the post-punk generation of bands into the mainstream. Besides their sound and image, what made the Jam such a success was Weller’s talent as a songwriter. His insights into human nature and the British working class allowed him to craft pop songs that were virtually three- or four-minute short stories. Albums like All Mod Cons and Sound Affects showed off this quality at its best. But when the band broke up and Weller moved on, he had a great deal of trouble reigniting interest in his work. Experiments with house music and traditional rock sounds went ignored, and even his solo career, begun in the early ‘90s, was generally overlooked at the time. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t have his fans. For many of the Brit-pop superstars that thrived in the ‘90s—Noel Gallagher of Oasis and Graham Coxon of Blur, for example—Weller had been a musical icon when they were growing up. They sang his praises and certainly their own music was influenced by him. Weller went on with his career, exploring a vast range of musical styles, from electronica to various forms of rock. His albums were textured, and featured an enormous amount of experimentation. Though he’s never been in the media spotlight as he was when he was in The Jam, his solo career has certainly let him develop into a unique artist that all pop music aficionados would benefit from familiarizing themselves with. Those he influenced have never forgotten him, however. In 2008, he released 22 Dreams, a double-disc album lush with complex arrangements and textures. It’s a smorgasbord for music junkie, especially those who followed his artistic progression after The Jam. As if to acknowledge the achievement, Gallagher and Coxon collaborate with him on a couple songs. He’s had a long and winding career, but Paul Weller is definitely still riding his creative wave to its crest. With him on tour again, it’s never been a better idea to get Paul Weller tickets and see him live. Written by Andrew Good and sponsored by StubHub.com.
