The Fly tickets are now available to be purchased or sold online at Stubhub.com. Where does high art and low art meet? You’d best pose that question to David Cronenberg, the famed cult film director whose visions of insect and flesh-inspired horror have influenced movies for decades now. But while he’s made his name in the world of cinema, he’s branching out into an entirely new field. An opera adaptation of Cronenberg’s best known movie, The Fly, will premiere in September 2008 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. Cronenberg directed the opera, and the music was composed by Howard Shore, who was also responsible for the film’s score (as well as many others he’s collaborated on with Cronenberg). There’s a good chance the opera crowd might not be familiar with the gory special effects Cronenberg’s fan base appreciates. For them, this series of articles will be helpful. Each article briefly examines one of the films from the director’s extensive canon. The list finally comes to a close. Sticking with the theme of crime and violence that he explored in the aptly titled A History of Violence, Cronenberg turns to organized crime—the Russian mafia, to be specific. He’s made an interesting shift in style and focus. Moving from mind-bending sci-fi and horror to more subtle drama, he’s phased himself into action films. Eastern Promises has a solid story about morality and the lengths we’ll go to rationalize our behavior. But what makes the film so effective is Viggo Mortensen, who is fast becoming Cronenberg’s favorite actor. Best known for his turn as Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, he starred in A History of Violence and now delivers a believable Russian hitman who’s cold as ice on the surface, yet still shows the flicker of a human heart. Cronenberg has never been squeamish, and the bloodletting is pretty graphic in this film. Unfortunately, the story suffers a bit by relying on conventional story arcs. There is deeper exploration into the violent subculture of the Russian mob, but it’s done mostly by Mortensen. Characters like a jealous crony who is secretly gay and a well-meaning Russian father who comes off as more of a comic relief cliché are underdeveloped and sap the life out of the narrative.
