After waiting ALL summer long, it’s finally vacation time on the islands. Restaurants, bars and the various tourist attractions opening and freshening up, in anticipation of the millions of visitors set to kick back, relax (and indulge) in what the best of the best has to offer. The Caribbean beckons with well-known sun, sand and surf. While those are fun reasons to visit, they just seem kind of…bland. You want something new; something unique and interesting to do while you visit the islands of dreams. Explore what’s under and over the Caribbean this year. Start your vacation with a stay at The Caves in Negril, Jamaica. Here, only twelve rooms allow for an intimate couples get-away. Dine in a cave in the sheer cliff where amazing views of the ocean make this meal one you will never forget. Hundreds of candles illuminate white tablecloths and flowers. Keep exploring the underground in Negril by swimming, snorkeling, rafting or spelunking in the caves along the cliff face. Pristine waters that are glassy clear will allow you to feel like you are in a cool salt-water pool…one with tropical fish in it. Take in the formations hanging from the ceilings. Revel in the feel of intimate privacy in these caves. Emerge from the underground to sail high in the air. The aerial tram in Costa Rica takes you high above a private nature reserve. The Atlantic Aerial Tram Tours are gondolas that will slowly take you across a private nature reserve where you can view birds and animals from high above. The tour covers 2.6 km. If you prefer a more thrilling ride, Toro La Bestia in Puerto Rico will leave your heart pounding. This zip line over the rainforest hits speeds of 60 mph. Compound that with heights of 853 feet above the misty rainforest floor and you are in for a thrilling flight! You say that’s not enough adrenaline for you? Okay, combine the heights and speeds of zip lines with the full moon on the AdrenaLUNA. This St. Lucian zip line will have you scrambling in the dark rainforest to find floating stairs. From there, jump off of Eagle’s Claw into the blackness of night, only illuminated by the full moon. This zip line tour will have you seeing stars. Santa Maria’s Mountain in Labadee holds the Dragon’s Tail, a rushing alpine coaster that sends guests 680 feet high for awesome views of the beach, the cruise ships and the mountains of Haiti. This coaster will allow you to set your own speeds with a hand brake. Let go of that brake and fly down this mountainside while the Dragon’s Tail ‘whips’ you through turns and gives tantalizing glimpses of this gorgeous island. Mystic Mountain Bobsled Coaster in Jamaica is similar to the Dragon’s Tail. This bobsled coaster is 1,000 meters long, twisting down the side of the mountain and offering oxygen-stripping views of the sea far below. The hand brake will allow you to slow down (a little bit) to see exotic birds and rainforest plants as you whiz by. Soar high or delve low on your next Caribbean vacation. There is magic in the air and under the ground. Chris Thompson currently resides in Mobile, Alabama with his wife and three (3) children.
