Monel 400 is an alloy whose predominant component is Nickel (65%- 70%), Copper (20%-29%) and varying percentage of iron, manganese or other compounds. Commercially, they are available in different forms like sheets, bars, plates, welded and seamless pipes and tubes, various types of fittings like elbows, toes, socket welds etc; and wires.
Monel 400 has number of desirable properties like exceptionally high strength and super resistant to varied agents like acids, alkalis and rapidly flowing seawater. Owning to its excellent weldability and high temperature tolerance, it is a popular material for high tolerance tubing. Exhibiting good ductility as well as thermal conductivity, it is a solid solution alloy which gets hardened when treated with cold working. Even at subzero temperature, it exhibits commendable mechanical properties.
Monel 400 can be typically used in hydro-carbon processing, marine engineering, heat exchangers, chemical processing,valves,pumps, fittings, fasteners and shafts; crude oil distillation towers, de-aerating heaters etc.
Monel is a group of copper-nickel alloy of varying proportions. Its two main types are monel 400 and monel 500.Monel 400 is specialty steel available in varied shapes and sizes and both in pre-cut and custom-forged. It is a nickel-copper alloy whose property is enhanced with addition of various other metals like iron and manganese. Some of its most distinguishing properties are:-
The alloy displays high mechanical strength and corrosion resistant properties. Additionally, it can withstand a wide range of temperature and thus finds extensive usage in the piping industry. Along with its toughness and corrosion resistant properties, it can show remarkable resistance to steam as well as sea water and thus is an ideal material for heavy duty applications like transfer pipes for oil refineries. It is also used for any high tolerance tubing.
Owning to its excellent weldability, Monel 400 is widely used for marine applications like seawater valves and pimp shafts. As the alloy have a very high melting point and remains tough in the harshest of conditions, its tubes are extensively used in boiler feeders, chemical plant equipments and heat exchangers. In varied acidic and alkaline environments, the alloy show excellent thermal conductivity and ductility and thus is ideal for trolling wires. It is also ideal for heavy duty constructions.
