How to Live Peacefully with a New Roommate

Real Estate
Many people who rent 2 bedroom apartments in MN do so in order to be able to split the cost of rent with a roommate. While this can be a great way to save on housing costs, having a roommate does come with its own challenges. This is especially true if your roommate is someone you don't know very well (or at all). Living with someone new can be stressful, and people in this kind of situation often find themselves struggling to maintain a harmonious relationship with their roommate.

If you are worried about not getting along with your roommate, try following these tips to make your living arrangements more peaceful.

Set Clear Boundaries

You may feel uncomfortable sitting down with your new roommate and setting clear, firm boundaries when you first move in together, but it is important to do this right away. Everybody has their pet peeves, whether it's dirty dishes in the sink, shoes scattered by the front door, or having someone using your shampoo. Whatever bothers you, it's important that you hash it out with your roommate on day one.

If you don't, your roommate may do something that annoys you without meaning to or vice versa. Though having the "boundaries" discussion on day one may seem like an uncomfortable way to start out your relationship, it is far better than starting out with suppressed irritation for one another.

Additionally, bringing up the issues later may be even more uncomfortable, because it is frequently instigated by you or your roommate crossing some unknown boundary and bothering one another. It makes for a much more peaceful living arrangement if you know which lines you shouldn’t cross from the very beginning.

Be Tidy

Most issues with roommate occur because one person tends to be cleaner than the other. The one who prefers a cleaner environment often becomes annoyed, feeling he carries more than his fair share of the cleaning duties. Whether you're a naturally tidy person, you should do your best to keep the common areas clean in the apartment.

If you have a private bedroom, you are free to keep it just as messy as you please. However, any areas that you share with your roommate should be cared for by both of you equally. If necessary, you and your roommate can sit down and create a chore chart to ensure nobody feels they are doing more than a fair share of work.

Respect Schedules

You and your roommate will both have lives outside of the apartment, whether that is school or work or both. You should be aware and respectful of one another’s schedule. If you know your roommate has to wake up early the following day for an exam or for work, don't have your friends over watching a loud movie at all hours of the night.

Likewise, if you have to get up early, and you know your roommate worked late the previous night, try not to make a lot of noise when you are getting ready in the morning. Essentially, it all comes down to respect and treating your roommate the way you would want to be treated.

Communicate Openly

As with any relationship, communication is a key component to a successful, harmonious relationship with your roommate. If your roommate is doing something that bothers you, then have a calm, respectful conversation about it. Try not to sound accusatory, and be sure to listen to your roommate’s concerns in return so that you can come to a compromise that satisfies both.

If you follow these tips, then sharing 2 bedroom apartments in MN should be no problem at all.
