Troubleshooting Hydraulic Oil Coolers

Automotive
Your machinery is a vital part of your business, and its smooth operation is a must for your day-to-day success. If the machines go down, your business shuts down. When there’s trouble with your hydraulic oil coolers in Irvine, Texas, you want to know as fast as possible how to locate the problem and what you need to do to fix it. Check out these commonly occurring hydraulic system problems, what might be causing them, and what you can do to solve the issue.

Noise

Pump noise may be caused by a variety of issues. One of the most common is cavitation brought on by air in the hydraulic fluid. Replacing filters or changing the fluid may help the problem; you should also make sure the fluid is running at the proper temperature and if there are any leaks. A noisy motor could possibly be caused by a misaligned or damaged coupling. Inspect the alignment of the coupling and inspect the parts for wear or other damage. If the relief valve is producing noise, the use of pressure gauges will help you set the correct pressure. Relief valve noise could also be caused by a worn poppet valve and seat; this cause may require extensive overhauling of the parts or their replacement.

Heat

Machines can run hot—even machines designed to cool other equipment can overheat. An overheated pump may be caused by dirty filters, a clogged inlet line or breather vent, or other similar issue. If the motor or relief valve is running too hot, installing pressure gauges to verify that the correct pressure is being used might solve the problem. Any of the parts might themselves be worn or damaged, requiring repair or replacement with new parts. These parts can also overheat from one common problem: overheated hydraulic fluid. The best remedies for this are to make sure the system pressure is correct, that the fluid isn’t dirty and the correct weight of fluid is being used, and that the cooling system is functioning properly.

Flow

Hydraulic fluid must flow properly if the equipment is to function well. Without proper flow, the oil coolers will not be able to do their job. If the flow of hydraulic fluid has stopped entirely, check the filters and inlet line for dirt and clogs. The coupling may also become damaged or sheared, requiring replacement and realignment. If the flow is merely too low, first check the flow adjustment; the solution may be as simple as that. Also check the relief valve and ensure that the system is not leaking. This problem could also be caused by a worn system component, possibly a pump or valve. If excessive fluid flow is the problem, again, you’ll want to check the control setting first. The motor may also have an incorrect RPM and need to be replaced.

Pressure

The fluid pressure is essential to the continued steady operation of the hydraulic system. No pressure at all is the same as the no-flow situation discussed above, and can be remedied using the same methods of troubleshooting. Low pressure may be caused by a too-low setting on the pressure reducing valve, or this valve could be damaged. Parts such as the motor, pump, or cylinder may also be damaged. Erratic or uneven pressure might be the result of air or other contamination in the hydraulic fluid, a worn relief valve, or a defective accumulator. Excessive pressure could be caused by any of the system’s valves malfunctioning.

Troubleshooting problems like this should get your equipment back up and running in a short time. But if you find you’re still having problems with your hydraulic oil coolers in Irvine, Texas, contact a cooling system professional who can examine your mechanical issues and get your machinery back to working hard again.
