Are you fed up with shaving and are looking for a dramatic and long-lasting solution? Laser hair removal allows you to throw away your razor and still have smooth, hair-free legs! If you are giving laser hair removal in New York some serious consideration, then this article is for you, as it outlines what you can expect and what you need to know from the procedure. What to Expect from Laser Hair Removal Not every patient experiences the same results from laser hair removal, but those who follow through on the entire treatment cycle will undoubtedly be satisfied with their results. The following list outlines what you can expect from laser hair removal treatments to give you a little background knowledge before you commit to treatments: - There is some discomfort involved: Most people experience some mild discomfort from laser procedures, and depending upon your skin sensitivity and your pain tolerance, you may even experience some pain. Some treatment areas are more sensitive than others (such as upper thighs and the groin area), so that is something to keep in mind. The sensation of laser hair removal is similar to being flicked firmly with a rubber band. Some people say it feels like a mild burning sensation, or even being poked with a forked prong. The good news is that the pain begins to subside immediately, and by the time you have left the treatment room, the discomfort will be a distant memory! If you experience discomfort in the form of redness or swelling following the procedure, your esthetician has a cream that can calm the irritated skin, or you can apply a cold compress to the area.
- You will be required to shave before your treatment: Unlike waxing or depilatory creams, you are required to shave your legs before each laser treatment. This is because the laser targets the dark hue in your hair follicle, and longer hair will get in the way of maximum results.
- Not every candidate for laser hair removal is ideal: The ideal candidate for optimum results is a candidate with light skin and dark hair follicles. This is because the laser targets the melanin (or dark hue) in the hair follicle. The better the laser can locate the follicle, the better the laser can shock the follicle and the better the chances of destroying the follicle entirely. Those with light skin and dark hair are the candidates that typically see the best results quickly.
- The results are not instant: While each treatment typically takes less than half an hour, it will take much longer than that to achieve results. Most patients will notice that the treated hair will start to fall out about 3 weeks following treatment. In another 2-3 weeks it will be time to go in for another treatment. This is to account for re-growth and the cycles of growth in your hair follicles. Since everyone has 3 or more cycles of hair growth, it will take quite some time to target each hair follicle. You can expect a laser treatment every 6-8 weeks, for a grand total of 4-6 treatments. This means that your treatment will take anywhere from 1-2 years to complete. Most laser treatment centers sell you a hair removal package that allows you to come back as many times as necessary until your hair is completely gone. While 1-2 years may seem like a long time, the truth is that this is a relatively short amount of time in the grand scheme of years that you will spend shaving! This makes laser hair removal in New York one of the best solutions to shaving out there!
