Optimum personal health and wellness comes down to incorporating habits into your daily life. Not all of these habits are major lifestyle changes, although some of them are. There are many minor changes and habits you can get into that will go a long way towards keeping you healthy and more energetic. Here are 5 things that you can do to stay healthy and have more energy to do the things you love.

Cut Down on Sugar

Sugar is in virtually everything in the American diet. It does not have to taste sweet to have sugar in it. Almost all sauces and salad dressings have a crazy amount of sugar in them. You do not have to cut back on sugar altogether (but if you can, you will be a lot healthier and happier), but be smart about the sugar you do eat. Eating too much sugar not only wreaks havoc on your teeth, even if you are brushing twice a day, but it also is terrible for your liver and can result in heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome.

Disinfect Your Doorknobs

If you find yourself getting sick more often than you would like, the problem could be your doorknobs. Many different people touch the doorknobs in your office and in your home. According to a research study performed at the University of Arizona, simply applying a disinfectant wipe to items that are commonly touched, including your doorknob, can reduce the probability of getting a cold or flu by up to 90%.

Make Food from Scratch

Maybe you haven’t thought too much about it, but have you ever taken the time to look at the ingredients on the label of the food you are about to put in your mouth? If the ingredients on the label sound like an ingredient in a science experiment instead of food, it is because it was. Much of the food found in grocery stores is processed in labs. The food is chemically modified in these labs to last longer or taste a certain way. Eliminate chemically processed foods from your diet and you will very soon be surprised at how much healthier you feel. Remember that if you cannot find a particular ingredient on any of the shelves at the supermarket, then it probably is not food.

Rethink Sardines

Sardines are the butt of many jokes, but the fact is that eating them twice a week can be great for you. They have a lot of protein in them as well as omega-3. Omega-3 is good for controlling arthritis symptoms, as well as curbing the effects of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and depression. You might balk at the idea of eating sardines, but there are several good reasons to incorporate these into your diet.

Take Time to Meditate

Meditation clears your mind and prepares you for the rest of the day. Taking a few minutes to meditate in the morning can prepare you for the day ahead as well as relieve stress. People who are experiencing stress are more susceptible to depression and anxiety disorders, as well as physical ailments. Meditation does not have to take very long but can make a major difference on your physical, emotional, and mental health.

Personal health and wellness is more than exercising regularly and counting your calories. If you are not incorporating small habits like reading the labels on foods you eat and taking time to relieve stress every day, then you will find it more difficult to do the big things that you need to do to stay healthy and active. Next time you are at the grocery store or just when you wake up in the morning, be sure to remember these 5 simple tips for your healthiest and happiest self.
