It’s the capitol of the United States of America—the District of Columbia—Washington, D.C. Each one of these hallowed tributes honors men and women who served their fellow countrymen. They strived to protect the innocent and give voices to the oppressed. Perhaps you are a museum aficionado. There are museums enough to satisfy dozens of interests. Do you have a child that is curious about everything having to do with bugs, animal fossils, plants, and the rest of the world around them? The Museum of Natural History frequently changes exhibits so there is always something new to discover. Not too far away is the National Air and Space Museum for people who are more interested in what goes on above their head than under their feet. If you’re into the arts, the D.C. area has plenty of them. There are several art galleries for you to explore famous paintings, classical sculptures, and modern displays. For performing arts, you will not be disappointed by the variety of live shows you can see at places such as the National Theatre or the Warner Theatre. You will have a good chance at finding a play in a genre you like any day of the week somewhere in the vicinity. The National Zoological Park is great for any age. Best of all, admission is free! The zoo is open year-round to give you a chance to see some of the world’s most incredible animals and exhibits. There are guided tours, or you can walk around at your own pace while you spend time with the elephants, giant pandas, and flamingos. It’s one of D.C.’s best family-friendly venues and always promises to be an enjoyable time. All this sightseeing is bound to make you hungry. The food scene in Washington, D.C., caters to every taste and every budget. It’s all there, from spaghetti and meatballs to Duck à l'Orange. Find a sophisticated spot for fine dining downtown or grab a delicious deli sub from a sandwich shop around the corner. The food is sure to be delicious and make you glad you visited. It’s hard to believe all this can be found in one place. These are just a few of the numerous things to do near DC.
