Key Things to Know about Coil Cords

Coil cords are already familiar to most of us as they are mostly seen accompanying landline telephones. Offering a spring like form it facilitates stretching and bending the cord with least stress while always keeping the wire in shape. While they can be easily extended to a great extent compared to their size in coiled condition, they always return to their original length and coiled shape when released by the user. This allows great ease and flexibility of use in many user scenarios.

How coil cords are constructed?

Coil cords generally consist of some straight cord sections immediately followed by curly cord sections. To allow the cord to behave like a spring, metal wire of the curly cord sections are wound around a mandrel. In most of the coil cords, the wire is round in countenance, though rectangular shaped and oval cross sections in such cords are not entirely rare. After wounding the coiled sections the entire cable is given the jacketed cover and with the heat made into that shape. In most coil cords polymer is used as jacketing material over the metal cord.

What are the materials used in coil cords?

Like most other cable products in the market, coiled cords also have a conducting material inside covered by insulation from outside. As for shielding various types of materials are used in coil cords including foil shielding and heat laminated Mylar shielding. As conductors metals like copper, aluminum, and tinned copper are mostly used. For insulation or jacketing material outside Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polypropylene (PP) are the two materials used in most coil cords. In some coil cords, to prevent abrasion or cutting through fluids like mineral oils a material called polyurethane (PU) is used for outside jacketing.

Different types of coil cords and uses

There is an array of different coiled cords and cables including retractile power cords, communication cords, retractile lead wires, etc. As for diverse applications, coil cords are used in an array of products, industries and purposes including automated equipment, generators, landline telephones, handheld tools, soldering irons, musical instruments, home appliances, etc.

Specifications to look for when buying

As per the specific use and application buyers of coiled cords can consider various aspects including retracted length of the cord, extended length and time taken by the cord to retract, and shape of the cord when put to rest. In most cases, the length of the coil cord when extended is at least 3 to 5 times longer than the length of the cord when kept in retracted shape. These considerations are important to ensure optimum ease and flexibility of use. Other coil cord specifications that are considered by the buyers include the diameter of the cord, strands, working voltage, whether the cord gets heated with extended hours of use, conductor color, outside insulation color, etc.

Lastly, coil cords that are built to enhance wiring life span of the cord by controlling motion and offering flexibility in maneuvering the product, are preferred by most. Ease of use, durability and high efficiency across various types of usage, are few of the things that make a great coil cord.

Meridian Cable Assemblies is one of the leading custom cable manufacturers with factories in the US and China providing OEMs with design and manufacture of cable assemblies, coil cords ( ), molded components, and wire harnesses for various industrial applications.
