Safe Driving is a Lifesaver!

Business

Learning to drive gives you freedom; it also comes with great responsibility. Driving is a privilege, not a right; taking time to learn how to be a responsible driver is a vital part of earning that privilege. There are many rules and regulations to master while developing your driving skills. Enroll in a school that offers driving courses in Ipswich, MA, or in your area, to start learning the rules. With proper instruction and many hours of practice, you can become an experienced, safe driver.

Tips on Learning How to Drive

  • Each state has individual requirements for obtaining a driver's license. The process usually begins with obtaining a learner's permit. Prepare for the permit test by studying the driver's handbook. Before you are eligible for your license, you are required to complete classroom time and time on the road with an instructor. In some cases, you can complete the class work online. Check DMV.org or a local driving school to learn your state's requirements.
  • Practice makes perfect; there is no substitute for time behind the wheel. No one is born with the ability to drive and we all make mistakes as we're learning the rules. Driving with a learner's permit requires you to have an experienced adult in the car with you. Start by practicing in empty parking lots or in areas with light traffic. One of the most important skills to develop is the ability to remain calm and try not to panic if things don't go perfectly.
  • Take time to prepare you and the car before you start driving. Adjust your mirrors and your seat position while you are parked, not while you are driving. Buckle your seatbelt before you put the car into gear. Wearing a seatbelt is not only the law, but will reduce your risk of injury or death in an accident.
  • Eliminate any distractions that will take your focus away from the road. Finish any phone conversations and put your phone away, and turn it off if you need to. Choose relaxing music and keep the volume at a reasonable level. Eat your breakfast, put your makeup on, and do your hair before you get into the car.
  • Concentrate on proper driving techniques. If you're backing out of a parking spot or driveway, be sure to check your mirrors before you start moving. Slowly apply your foot the gas to accelerate smoothly. Be aware of the acceleration rate of the car you are driving because each car accelerates at its own rate. Brake response can also vary in cars. Figure out how long it takes for the car to reach a complete stop and apply the brakes accordingly. Make sure you leave plenty of room between your car and the car in front of you and adjust the distance to accommodate changing weather and road conditions. Try not to stop suddenly unless there is no other choice; sudden stops can lead to the rear end collisions. Practice smooth steering; keep both hands on the wheel in the proper position and utilize proper turning techniques.
  • Follow the rules for proper lane changes. Signal to let the surrounding cars know your intentions, check your mirrors, look over your shoulder, and proceed with the lane change. Be sure to locate your turn signals and lights before you operate the vehicle.
  • When you have reached your destination, find a parking place and put the car into "park." Turn off the engine and set your parking brake. If you are parking on an uphill slant, turn the wheels away from the curb; on a downhill slant turn them toward the curb.

Once you have completed the requirements, taken driving courses in Ipswich, MA, or in your area, you are eligible to obtain a driver's license. Keep you and your passengers safe by continuing to follow the safety rules.
