How to Avoid Needing Emergency Furnace Repair

Home Improvement

Imagine this: It's the dead of winter with snow and freezing temperatures outside, but you're curled up in your home enjoying the cozy warmth your furnace brings. Then, your furnace breaks down. You may have to wait for a few days before a technician is able to come make the necessary repairs, so in the meantime you'll have to deal with some major discomfort and inconvenience. Wouldn't you rather prevent the need for an emergency furnace repair in Minneapolis? While it's not a guarantee, following these simple steps will keep your furnace efficient and working at its best

Start with the Best Equipment

A furnace isn't something you want to skimp on. If you are building a house or replacing a furnace that is 10-15 years old, choose to replace it with quality over price. That doesn't always mean that the most expensive furnace is the best, but you will definitely get what you pay for. Choosing a high-quality and energy-efficient furnace up front also means that you'll enjoy a monthly savings on your energy bill.

With a better furnace, it will also typically come with a longer and better warranty, and it will last longer in general. Get a furnace from a brand name you've heard of and can trust, and you won't regret your decision to spend a little bit more.

Ensure It's Installed Correctly

A top-quality furnace won't do you much good if it's not installed perfectly. There are small ways an installation can go wrong that will cause you headaches down the road. Use only a well-trained contractor from a reputable company and don't try to cut corners by installing it yourself or hiring some guy down the street for cheap. Again, you get what you pay for.

Some contractors charge lower prices because they know they will cut corners on the installation. The technician should follow the entire process completely and avoid rushing the job. Great technicians will also go the extra mile by checking for proper air flow, gas pressure, refrigerant, and make any other adjustments that are necessary.

Change the Filter Regularly

As simple as changing the filter is, many people put it off for much too long or simply forget to do it. Standard filters should be changed at least every 2 months to keep your furnace running at peak efficiency.

Air filters are essential, as they stop allergens, dirt, and dust from entering the air you breathe in your home. A filter that is regularly replaced will also keep your furnace from working harder than necessary to do its job.

Make sure you get the right kind of replacement filter for your specific model by talking to a professional if needed, but you won't need a professional to change it. It's so simple, anyone can do it in a matter of seconds!

Get an Annual Inspection

Regular maintenance inspections on your furnace are easily forgotten, especially since the start of the holiday season is also when you need to start using your furnace much more. Everyone is busy, but forgetting to maintain your furnace is a huge mistake and will end up costing you much more in the long run. You will also be at a much higher risk for the scenario of your furnace breaking down when you need it most.

It's best to get an annual inspection at the end of summer or the start of fall, before you have to rely on your furnace every day. That way you can be confident your furnace will be able to carry you through the winter comfortably and you won't need emergency furnace repair in Minneapolis
