Lloret de Mar is not only a destination for beach lovers, but also for those who enjoy combining relaxation with a little fitness. This beautiful village sits on a stunning coastline, and one of the best ways to explore it and appreciate what is on offer is undoubtedly by getting the boots on and setting off on foot. |
With so many trails that either meander along the coast past solitary coves or take you inland through the pine and holm-oak forests, Lloret de Mar is perfect for those who love to hike. And what better way to get to know the real heart of a region and experience more of its flora and fauna than under your own steam and in your own time.
The Gran Recorrido (GR)
The Gran Recorrido, known by several other names depending on which European country you are in, is a network of footpaths that criss cross many countries in Europe. Characteristically marked with red and white stripes, the trails are well organised, well kept and easy to follow. The paths, maintained in Spain by the Spanish Mountain Sports Federation, make hiking in so many regions of the country very accessible.
Every section of the GR is numbered, and two sections of the GR92 that runs from Portbou in the Basque region to Tarifa, on the southern tip of Spain, pass through Lloret de Mar.
The GR92TR11 section of the route is a gentle 13 km stretch that takes the average hiker 3 hours and 15 minutes to cover. Offering ample opportunity to indulge in the magnificent views, this walk takes in the cove of Sa Caleta with its delightful hotchpotch of local fishing boats; Cala Canyelles, with its course white sand and crystal blue waters; and Tossa de Mar, the vibrant town that was once an ancient fishing village. There are several small cafes and restaurants on the way where you can enjoy a snack, but it is a nice idea to pack a picnic so you can pick the perfect spot and eat whenever you are ready.
The GR92TR12 covers almost 14.5 km and takes slightly longer to walk (3 hours and 40 minutes). Along this easy route, you will have the pleasure of passing the Castle of Sant Joan; Blanes, the town classed as the ‘Gateway to the Costa Brava’; and Tordera, with the Romanesque church of Saint Stephen. Es Replec and Restaurant Bianco are good places to eat in Blanes, and Taberna Andaluza El Cenachero in Tordera is also a fine choice.
The Lloret de Mar Fenals Coastal Path
This is a truly beautiful walk. Following the path that clings to the coastline between Lloret and Fenals’ beaches, the path is one of the most stunning in the area. Starting on Lloret’s promenade, you leave the beach after passing the hidden cove of Sa Caravera. The path winds its way along, offering fabulous views of the coastline before reaching the statue of Dona Marinera, created by the talented Ernest Maragall i Noble. You can take a break at the rocky cove of Cala Banys and enjoy a refreshing cocktail before continuing on to Fenals Point. Here, the magnificent 11th century Castle of Sant Joan (€3 adults, or €1.50 concession) awaits.
