Keeping Your Fire Safety Equipment Up to Date

Home Improvement
Having the right equipment necessary to prevent disaster isn't just a good idea, it's often a requirement for many businesses. For example, a restaurant attempting to operate without proper fire safety equipment would quickly land itself in serious trouble with the fire marshal and possibly the local government as well. Even if it did escape penalties, the negative publicity from such disdain for safety regulations would be more than enough to sink the business for quite a while, if not permanently. In order to stay in compliance with regulations and ensure that customers want to visit your establishment, you need to make sure safety is always a top priority. Here's what you need to do to make that happen.

Regularly Test All Safety Equipment

It's far better to test if things are working when you don't need them than to save them for when disaster strikes and find that the item you need is having an issue. A regular check of all safety equipment is critical to making sure that you and your employees are protected in case of an emergency. Smoke detectors and fire extinguishers should both be tested at least once a month, and should be promptly replaced if there are any issues with either.

Fire sprinklers in Berkeley Heights should be tested at least once every six months, and they should be examined monthly to make sure that they are up to date and ready to activate. Fire sprinklers don't need as much attention or maintenance as smoke detectors or fire extinguishers, but they do need to be monitored to make sure problems do not develop. After all, fire sprinklers only activate in very serious situations, and it must be certain that they are always working properly.

Regularly Keep Your Crew Informed

At the same time, it should be a regular practice to review all safety procedures with anyone who is going to be in the building. You and your staff are the first line of defense against disasters, so having a well-informed staff that follows best practices is a great way to help prevent issues later. If your staff doesn't know what to do in case of an emergency, you're going to be in a tight spot if something goes wrong. The same is true if the staff doesn't know how to prevent emergencies from happening. The best way to stop an issue is to make sure they never occur in the first place, so regular information sessions and reviews are crucial.

Have an Independent Examination

It's almost always better to get multiple viewpoints on a situation because a second pair of eyes could find something that you might have overlooked. Ideally, this second pair of eyes should come from outside of your company so that he or she has no idea what kind of issues might have already been discovered. By sending an expert in without advanced knowledge, it's more likely that your inspector will find something that seems completely normal to you and other building regulars, but is actually a potential hazard. In turn, that allows you to get an honest and unbiased look at what you need to fix to make sure that the risk of future disasters is lowered as much as possible.

Fire safety equipment is just like a good insurance policy: you hope you'll never have to use it, but it's important to have if you need it. You might never have to use fire sprinklers in Berkeley Heights, but if you do, it's best to make sure that they are working properly and you and your staff knows how they work and how to use them. Taking proper precautions now could be the difference between a minor issue and a catastrophe if something goes wrong in the future.
