One of the greatest pleasures of living abroad, especially in the Caribbean, is trying the local food. In St Lucia, with its fresh local ingredients including home-grown herbs and spices, this is a genuine treat. |
The delicious Creole dishes are warm with spice and fragrance you may not have tried before. But strangely, in St Lucia, it’s the things you have tried before that will have your taste buds leaping and craving more.
The warm, tropical sunshine and occasional downpours of the St Lucian climate make it the perfect place to grow and ripen a range of delicious tropical fruits. You may think that you’ve tasted mango, papaya, even banana before, but until you have tasted one picked fresh off a tree in St Lucia, believe me, you haven’t!
The Fruitman is a local character in St Lucia who, for the last 20 years, has seen it as his duty to deliver lush, ripe tropical fruit to residents and visitors staying on the northeast coast around Rodney Bay.
In an old, battered speedboat, flying more national flags than the United Nations, Gregory (aka the Fruitman) travels the bay stopping at popular points to sell his wares. One of his regular stops is The Landings St Lucia, where he offers his daily harvest to guests and residents at the luxury resort.
With every fruit you can image from coconut, bananas, pineapple and passion fruit to star fruit, mango, papaya and watermelon, the Fruitman will deliver any fresh item you can imagine with a smile and a friendly conversation.
Docking at The Landings St Lucia every day, guests and residents alike begin to rely on his cheery arrival, which he announces with a few loud honks on his conch shell, for their mid-morning fruit snack.
According to Gregory, he collects the fruit himself each morning. He is hardly stuck for choice given the abundance of fruit trees on the lush tropical island.
One of the most popular fruits on the island is the coconut which the Fruitman will crack open for you to either eat its rich, creamy inside or drink its health promoting water.
Those feeling a little more adventurous could try some of the less familiar fruits the Fruitman has to offer, such as bread fruit.
If you’re lucky enough to meet the Fruitman, you should take the chance to stock up on a variety of lush tropical fruits. Many of the bars at the luxury hotels around the bay, like The Landings St Lucia, will happily blend your fruit for you into a delicious smoothie or healthy fruit juice.
Keep your eye out for the Fruitman’s limes, pineapple, oranges and you’ll have the perfect ingredients to hand over to the barman to create a delicious, refreshing glass of traditional St Lucian rum punch (once they’ve added the rum of course).
