My 3 Top Picks for Grand Canyon Air Tours from Las Vegas

Travel & Tourism,Recreation & Leisure
If you're like a lot of people, summer is your favorite time of year because of the nice weather, lazy days, and chances to take fun getaways. You can make this summer one to remember if you have an exciting adventure in one of nature's most beautiful locations. One of the best adventures to consider is a helicopter or airplane tour of the Grand Canyon, and you can do that even if you can only get away for a couple of days or the weekend. To help you select a good tour, I've listed the top three air tours below for your consideration.

The Top Tour Out Of Vegas

Since Vegas is situated fairly close to the Canyon, many tours depart from there. The top recommended Vegas tour is the helicopter tour that flies to the West Rim, descends into the Canyon, and then lands on the floor, and this particular tour is so popular, it departs every hour. This type of landing tour is only possible if you take a Vegas tour.

This helicopter tour flies over Hoover Dam on the way to the Canyon, so you can see the massive structure from the air, then the chopper flies over the Canyon before descending 3500 feet to the bottom where it lands near the Colorado River. A Champagne picnic awaits your arrival, and if you feel like walking around, you can explore the area on foot.

This tour can be even better if you upgrade it to include a river tour that gives you a unique perspective on the beauty and majesty of the Canyon.

Fly To The South Rim By Plane

Another top tour is of the South Rim, which is farther away from Vegas, but you can get there by airplane. There are two tours available at the South Rim and these take the second and third spots on my recommended tours list.

One tour option comes with the 60-minute flight from Vegas to the airport near the South Rim where you transfer to a helicopter to complete your air tour of the Canyon from the South to the North Rim and back. After that, you hop on a tour bus for a two-hour ride through the park for a closer look at the scenery and famous landmarks.

The other tour available at the South Rim is a longer helicopter flyover of the Canyon. Just like the shorter tour, you'll fly over to the North Rim, but then you are given an additional 20 minutes of flight time as the helicopter flies over to the eastern park border and back. This is truly a comprehensive tour. This tour covers about 75 percent of the entire National Park, and this means you'll see many notable landmarks like the Dragoon Corridor, which is the widest and deepest part of the Canyon.

The Deluxe Option

When you go to book your tour, you'll have to pick between a basic tour or the deluxe version. You'll still have a great experience if you book a basic tour, but the deluxe version has its advantages. Basic flights use the AStar or Bell Ranger helicopters for sightseeing.

If you go with a deluxe tour, you'll get some extra perks on your tour. The deluxe tours fly on superior EcoStar choppers, which offer a quieter ride in larger cabins, plus the seating is more comfortable, and with the seats arranged stadium style along with the massive wraparound window, you'll have fantastic, unobstructed views no matter where you sit. It is worth the extra price for a deluxe tour since you'll have the best view possible and your ride will be more comfortable. Also, the deluxe tours give you VIP treatment when you're picked up and dropped off in a complementary limousine.

To Conclude

Once you're all set to book your tour, just keep these handy tips in mind. Buy your tour online with your credit card and book your tour in advance. It's a good idea to buy your tour about two weeks in advance because the price will probably go up the closer it gets to the flight date. So, plan ahead and book your tour as soon as you can so you can avoid paying more than you have to for your tour. Buying online also helps you get the lowest rate because you can avoid commission fees from booking agents, so lock in your seats with your credit card by buying online and avoid phone or kiosk sales.

The first decision you have to make is whether you want to go to the South Rim or the West Rim. It's up to your preferences. The South Rim tour gives you more air time, plus it has a lot of remote wilderness areas to view, while the West Rim is more about adventure since you can descend into the Canyon and explore by foot or boat. No matter which tour you choose, you'll be set to experience the best the Canyon has to offer when it comes to adventure and scenic viewing.
