If you are like me, then you like to keep busy. In my spare time, I enjoy restoring cars and bringing them back to what they once were. However, I have noticed that a lot of people enjoy spray painting and completing their own DIY projects. I thought that I would create a detailed DIY spray painting guide for those that would like a little support or for anyone that is trying to spray paint for the first time. Before you start painting everything, you need to understand the material that you are going to be working with. For example, are you going to be painting metal, plastic or fibre-glass?Trust me, all of it makes quite a significant difference. Now that you know what you are working on, you can look at researching different paint providers. If you are working on materials such as metal, plastic and glass, I recommend using a RAL Spray Paint as they provide a number of different colours and can even match an existing colour if that is what you need. Now that you have your paint, you can prepare yourself and the working area. Make sure that you are wearing some old clothes because you will get dirty. I have been covered head to toe in spray paint before in some of my best pants – not good. Another good thing to do is to make sure that you mask-off the areas that you do not want to cover with paint. You can also use newspaper to do this if you do not have any masking tape. The last thing you need is to cover your partner’s favourite item. If you are working on a car, you will want to rub down the car surface until it is smooth or you see the metal sheet sunder the original paintwork. Allow this to settle and once ready, apply a primer to the material. When you apply this, you will need to allow at least 24 hours to pass before you can do anything else as it needs to dry completely. Now that the primer is dry, begin masking off the area of the vehicle or items that you do not want to paint. Once settled, grab your spray paint can and shake it well. It is worth looking at the back of the can to see the operating instructions as each manufacturer and can could be different. Release the lid and hold the can approximately 30cm away from the area that you want to spray. Starting spraying the area evenly and apply a lot of coats. This ensures that the colour remains consistent and looks even. When you have finished spraying and the paint has dried, use an old cloth and warm water to wash down the material. This will help remove any paint particles that are not needed. Allow the area to dry and then you have completed your own bit of DIY. Chris Graham is the Managing Director of CJ Aerosols.
