Winter is right around the corner. Swimming pools in Senoia need maintenance during the fall in order to prepare for cooler climates. Whether you are a new pool owner or a seasoned user, check out these procedures for closing your pool from the experts at Hilltop Pools & Spas. Winterizing with Chemicals A week before you close your pool, adjust the pH, calcium hardness, and alkalinity according to manufacturer’s specifications. The pH needs to be between 7.2 and 7.6 while the calcium and alkalinity should be between 80-120 ppm. Shock your pool with an extra strong chlorine that is at least 65% sodium hypochlorite. Add shock to a five-gallon bucket of pool water, mix well, and then pour it into the pool away from the skimmer while the filter is running. When chlorine levels have returned to 1-3 ppm, add a winterizing algaecide to prohibit the formation of algae during the winter. Clean the Pool Remove everything from the pool including ladders, baskets, filters, pumps, hoses, and decorations. Thoroughly scrub the bottom and sides of your pool with a hard bristle brush and remove all debris with a skimming net. Empty the skimmers and debris catchers thoroughly. Backwash the filter several times and remove filter elements until spring. Remove any sand or DE that may have settled in the bottom of the filter with a shop vacuum. Water Levels Lower your water levels 12-18 inches below the skimmer if you have a mesh pool cover and 3-6 inches if you have a solid, floating cover. Use a shop vacuum to remove excess water from the pumps, filter, and other pieces of equipment. Blowout pipes leading to and from your pool or add specially formulated pool antifreeze to prevent the pipes from freezing and cracking during the winter. Cover your pool according to your cover’s specifications. For more tips on winterizing swimming pools in Senoia, contact the professional at Hilltop Pools.
