4 Steps for Tree and Stump Removal

Business

Many times, homeowners will need to remove a tree from their yard. The tree may be dead and create hazardous conditions underneath. Or, it begins to grow around power lines. When performing tree and stump removal, Lilburn arborists will follow a series of steps to ensure their safety.

Assess the Situation

The first thing the tree cutting company will do is look at the tree to determine a course of action. If the tree is still alive and sturdy, they can often times harness into the tree to do most of the work. Old or dead trees may not be stable and special lifts need to be used to ensure their safety. They will use caution tape to prevent unwanted traffic from wandering into the landing area. Some companies will even use a spotter to reinforce the area remains free of people or pets. They will also identify any structures or other obstructions that they may need to work around. Finally, they will develop a cutting plan that minimizes any potential dangers. This plan will keep the pieces small and easy to handle.

Start Small

Once the area is secured and a plan is in place, the cutting will begin. The trimmer will begin taking off smaller branches at the top of the tree. For large trees, they will begin cutting on the outside of the branches, dividing them into manageable pieces that make it easier to get into the trunk. Once they can get to the trunk, the branches are cut flush to it to eliminate any knobs or protrusions that can get hung up on the way down. As each branch is removed, workers on the ground will remove them from the area, often times taking them to a chipper to be ground up.

Tackle the Trunk

Once all the branches have been removed and the trunk is bare, the trimmer will move back to the top to begin again. Gone are the days of axes and yelling “timber” for tree trimming companies, especially for tall, mature trees. Bringing down a large trunk in one piece can be very dangerous First, they will connect a rope to the top and cut a more manageable section off. This piece is then lowered to the ground and removed. This process continues until only a stump remains at ground level.

Grind the Stump

Once the tree has been brought down, the stump is the final piece to be removed. Some homeowners elect to keep the stump, making it a focal point in their landscape. Often times, though, it is a tripping hazard. There are many ways to remove a stump. If it is small, it can be dug out with just a shovel. Larger stumps take a little more work. Commercial chemicals can be applied that speed up the decomposition process. But, this can still take years to fully disintegrate the stump. Many homeowners elect to have the tree removal company grind the stump down below the ground and bury the remaining piece. A large machine with several blades chops the stump into chips.

A dead tree can be very hazardous to the family living near it. Many homeowners will elect to have it removed. Depending on the size of the tree and stump removal, Lilburn homeowners would be best suited in hiring a company with procedures in place to make the process safe for life and property.
