Free Gospel music is a music genre in Christian music. There are various types of gospel music based on the creation, performance and significance. Depending on country, culture and social context, gospel music definitions may vary. What is a common characteristic in all definitions is that Gospel music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics these can be heard on southern Gospel radio stations as well as on recorded albums. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace and can be traced to the early 17th century, with roots in the black oral tradition. Hymns and sacred songs were repeated in a call and response fashion these hymns included hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment while most of the singing was done a capella. The first published use of the term ?Gospel Song" probably appeared in 1874. The original gospel songs were written and composed by authors such as George F. Root, Philip Bliss, Charles H. Gabriel, William Howard Doane, and Fanny Crosby. Gospel music publishing houses emerged. In the 1920s with the advent of the radio and the creation of Southern Gospel Radio stations the audience for gospel music increased leading gospel music to be music moved into major auditoriums, and gospel music concerts became quite elaborate. Southern gospel music, sometimes known as "quartet music" for its traditional "four men and a piano" set up, southern gospel has evolved over the years into a popular form of music across the United States and overseas, especially among baby boomers and those living in the Southern United States. From early on the genre was promoted via southern gospel radio stations and other media; at first it become popular via songbooks, such as those published by R. E. Winsett of Dayton, Tennessee, southern gospel was and is one of the few genres to use recordings, radio, and television technologies from the very beginning for the advancements of promoting the genre. Even today this genre is played on many a radio station; In 2005, The Radio Book, a broadcast yearbook published by M Street Publications, reported 285 radio stations in the U.S. with a primary format designation as "southern gospel," including 175 AM stations and 110 FM stations. In fact, southern gospel was the 9th most popular format for AM stations and the 21st most popular for FM. Southern gospel radio promoters routinely service more than a thousand radio stations which play at least some southern gospel music each week. Nowadays, free gospel music is available via the Internet and this has lead to broadening the southern gospel music fan base by using computer technologies and continual streaming. Other than access to free gospel music, a more modern approach to traditional gospel music has also increased the fan base by blending traditional southern gospel, bluegrass, modern country, contemporary Christian and pop music elements. This Progressive southern gospel generally features artists who push their voices to produce a sound with an edge to it whereas the traditional style southern gospel singers employ a more classical singing style.
